The 97th General Hospital, about 4km east of our neighborhood, on the far
side of the Hauptfriedhof, on Gießener Straße. Built for the Luftwaffe in
1941, it served as a US Army hospital from 1945 to 2006. I worked here
1960-61 at the hospital's internal closed-circuit AFN station, where I had a
radio show every Thursday evening; I could take the number 13 trolley straight
there after school. In those days the hallway cornice moldings (miles of
them) were solid swastikas. Ella Fitzgerald came here in 1952 and performed
for the patients with Max Roach and Ray Brown.
