Vivian Lund at the WAVES training facility in Cedar Falls, Iowa: "3000 Women
in Blue", late 1942. This was the Navy's first WAVES Basic Training site;
it had just opened in space provided by Iowa State Teacher's College. Basic
Training moved to the Hunter College campus in the Bronx in February 1943,
and from then on the Cedar Falls facility was used for WAVES Yeoman training
(office and clerical work). In the picture, Mom is standing in front of her
dormitory, Bartlett Hall, a.k.a. "USS Bartlett". The sign on the door says
"Naval Training School Seamen's Entrance".
Iowa State Teacher's College is now the University of Northern Iowa. It has a wealth
of information about the WAVES training program in the WAVES
on Campus section of its Digital
library.
