Around 1954 all the white people in the area got together and chipped in and
bought this plot of land to make what is now called the Chesterbrook
Swimming and Tennis Club. Here you can see a corner of the newly cleared
land, which previously had been woods and scrub brush. On the far left,
Chesterbrook School and in front of it a piece of the pump house. To the
right some bungalows of then-recent vintage, and behind the school some
older wooden houses on some gently rolling wooded land, which you could
stare at from the school windows. The photo at right is taken from about
the same spot, looking in the same direction; click on it to enlarge it.
