My mother Vivian in high school, late 1930s. She was born in Minneota MN in
her mother's house in 1922; graduated from Minneota High School in 1940 and
moved to California to live with her oldest sister Polly and worked with Polly
at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. In 1942, after taking a preparatory
course, she enlisted in the US Navy WAVES and became a Morse-code
Radiotelegraph operator, or "Radio Wave" at Navy Department headquarters in
Washington DC, where she met my father, who had the same job. They married
in 1944 and I was born the same year. We lived in northern Virginia until
1963, when I went in the Army and my mother left my father and took my
little brother Dennis to Long Beach California, where eventually she met
Frank Rider and they were a couple until her death. After Dennis died in
1978, Mom and Frank moved to Big Bear, and finally to Indio where she died
in 2002.
