Article about Daniel da Cruz's trip to the Mideast in 1958-1959 in the
Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph, Sunday, Feb 22, 1959, Section B,
p.7, contributed by Cousin Raimundo. "A look at the Middle East thru the
eyes of a classical scholar — with some perceptive glimpses into the
present-day turbulence which swirls around the ruins of antiquity in those
ancient lands — can be had these days in a visit with a retired
college professor who has just returned home to Colorado Springs from a
two-month tour of Biblical Lands." He delayed his trip for some months due
to the 1958 crisis in Lebanon, where his son Daniel
(
Uncle Pete) had just
taken a Lebanese bride
(
Aunt Leila).
Ironically, his other son Frank
(
my father) was in Lebanon
in 1958 taking part in the turmoil.
In the article Daniel speaks of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the plight of the
Palestinians, and the Cold War, and advocates a unifed Arab bloc aligned
with the West rather than the Soviet Union because "the United States is
not a colonialist power". If he were alive today, I think he would be
profoundly disillusioned.
