The
Soviet
War Memorial in West Berlin, 1959. It's still there at edge of the
Tiergarten opening out on the Straße des 17 Juni, about 370 meters west of
the Brandenburg Gate. 2000 Soviet soldiers are buried here. It's also
close to the Reichstag. The memorial was built in 1945 from the rubble of
Nazi government buildings including the Reichskanzlei (Reich Chancellery),
in the area that Hitler meant to devote to Welthauptstadt Germania, which
was to be the capital of the world after the ultimate victory.
