The October 11, 1943, issue of LIFE Magazine has an eight-page photo shoot
of an all-night New York City jam session that included many of greatest
jazz musicians and singers of the time, and it was all recorded by Army
sound engineers to be issued on 12-inch 78rpm Vdiscs for American troops
overseas. Like most Vdiscs, these were unique recordings that never saw
commercial release. The musicians were not paid or regulated in any way.
Thus Vdiscs often feature combinations of performers never heard on
commercial releases.
