Students are expected to attend all class meetings, complete the assigned readings, and contribute to the discussion in substantive ways. In lieu of examinations, students must: 1) post critical reflections on weekly readings to the course bulletin board; and 2) complete two papers, each about ten (10) typed, double-spaced pages, on topics approved by the instructor. The first paper is due on October 26, 2001, and the second, on December 11, 2001. The topic of the first paper is: Who is an Asian American? You are asked to explore the category Asian American through experience (e.g. personal observations, life histories of relatives and acquaintances, questionnaires and surveys), and through studied and disciplined approaches to the question of identity. You are especially encouraged to examine the question in its broadest sense, including (and not limited to) race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class and citizenship. Remember, you must discuss your paper with the instructor to secure his approval before handing in your project. The subject of the second paper can be on any research topic that interests you, subject to instructor approval, within the parameters of this class.
Bulletin Board Students will be responsible for leading at least one bulletin board discussion. (Assignments will be made during the first week of classes.) Leaders of the bulletin board must post a central question that addresses most or all of the weeks readings; class members will then respond to this question with a short paragraph. Questions must be posted two days before section by 10pm; responses must be posted the day before section by 10 pm. GRADES:
