This course offers an introduction to the historical relationships of various Latin American peoples to the United States, and their respective experiences as "Latinos" within the U.S. from a comparative historical and transnational perspective. Latinos (or "Hispanics") are not one people defined by a singular shared history of relationship with the U.S. nation-state, nor do all Latino groups have a common experience in the U.S. Through reading s and discussions of primary and secondary texts, this course examines the various histories of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, and other Latin American groups, and the transformations of the United States in relation to them, with a special interest in the possibilities for, as well as the obstacles to, convergences among Latinos along social and political lines.
