Melodies from the Moongate 2011

FRIDAY, 12/09/11
7:30 PM
Lerner Party Space

Sounds of China presents the first annual Melodies from the Moongate, a mesmerizing fusion concert. This year, be enchanted by our lead musician, Steph Chou, who blends classical traditional Chinese music with western jazz harmonies on the alto saxophone. A graduate of our very own Columbia University, she has performed at prestigious venues alongside numerous renowned jazz musicians in New York, Beijing, and all over the world.

The concert is held in Earl Hall auditorium on the third floor of Earl Hall. The auditorium is most often used for religious services and has a pristine, meditative atmosphere that well suits the poetic harmonies of classical Chinese music. But the low stage platform brings familiar soothing jazz rhythms right to you. Whether you’re a novice to Chinese music or an expert with melodies engrained into your heart, be swept away by the stage adorned by deep aureate curtains which accurately reflect the golden sounds of East meets West harmony.

After the concert, enjoy the reception while mingling amongst inspiring musicians and awed guests. Both admission and reception are free and we welcome everyone to join.

Melodies from the Moongate aims to bring classical Chinese music to Columbia campus. A diverse gamut of organizations support our initiative including the Gatsby Fund, [enter co-sponsors here].

Night Market 2011

FRIDAY, 10/28/11
6-9 PM
LOW PLAZA

Get ready for the Night Market!

Night Market is an annual Columbia University tradition of over 25 years operated by more than 40 clubs on campus. Filled with performances, food, and fun, it brings to life the traditional night markets of China for the 3,000 attendees.

This year’s theme is “lights”. As the sun sets, Low Plaza will be illuminated by the rows of tents beckoning all to join. The aroma of delicacies will entice you to scour the stalls. (Keep a look out for Sounds of China’s Tofu Hua (flower)!) The rhythm of the dances and performances lit up by the backdrop of the Night Market will welcome you to celebrate alongside the Columbia community. Through the thick and thin, we all hold onto hope. This celebration of lights renews our hope for better change.

A portion of all proceeds will go to Wokai, a micro-finance charity. The organization offers micro-entrepreneurs the opportunity to jumpstart small businesses in rural China while lifting them out of poverty. In particular, Sounds of China supports these progressive changes as music of China, considered one of the highest art forms in the world, originates from these very rural communities.

Min Xiao Fen and her Blue Pipa Trio

Renowned Chinese pipa player Min Xiao Fen will perform in Earl Hall at Columbia University with her Blue Pipa Trio on Saturday, February 28. As a foremost representative of pipa music in the West, Min has carried the art of traditional Pipa to newer and wider audiences each year since her arrival in the States. Min possesses an impressive resume, and is considered a courageous pioneer in both orchestral and underground projects, having collaborated with composers and musicians as varied as Tan Dun, John Zorn and Bjork.

This performance will encompass well-known traditional repertoires such as "Flying Flowers Touching the Green Grass" and "Ambush from All Sides"; and composer Huan Ruo's 13 minute "Written on the Wind," commissioned by Meet the Composer specifically for Min in 2008. Min will also perform a range of pieces with members of her Blue Pipa Trio: Steve Salerno (guitar) and Dean Johnson (bass), featuring bluegrass and jazz inspired by Thelonious Monk and George Gershwin, as well as some of her own compositions.

If you would like to sign up to be a contestant for K^2, please sign up before Oct 31st! You can enter the contest individually or by groups.
