New York Times, 1 May 1968, p.34: "Tense Moments: Police and sit-ins
confront each other at Hamilton Hall before action. William H. Booth, Human
Rights Chief, is at right center." Filmmaker Melvin Morgulis is at far
right on the Jefferson statue. Far left, facing the police: defenders of
the building occupiers. The police arrived on campus around midnight and
were ready to move by 1:00am but, according to the Times article,
were ordered to "wait until Harlem was asleep", and so didn't act until
2:30am.
