Panelist Dr. Mitchell Bernstein was an Assistant Professor of anatomy and structural biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1986 then conducted post-doctoral research at Yale and Princeton Universities researching in the areas of molecular biology, cell biology, genetics and biochemistry. As an associate, Dr. Bernstein focuses on all aspects of preparation and prosecution of patent applications in chemistry, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, for clients ranging from small biotech startup companies to established pharmaceutical companies.
Panelist Dr. David J. Austin was the Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Rib-X Pharmaceuticals, an antibiotic drug discovery and development company. Prior to that, Dr. Austin was an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department at Yale University and was the scientific founder of Ambit Biosciences. He received his Ph.D. from Emory University in
1996 and conducted post-doctoral research in chemical biology at Harvard University. In addition to drug development, Dr. Austin's research background includes organic synthesis and chemical biology and the use of chemical probes to study biological function. He is currently serving as Science adviser to the firm, preparing patents for prosecution and assisting in litigation while preparing for law school.
