The Department of Biological Sciences congratulates Professor Darcy Kelley who will accept one of this year's Distinguished Columbia Faculty Awards at ceremony tonight (February 25th). The Faculty of Arts and Sciences gives this honor annually to faculty members who have shown exceptional merit in scholarship and dedication to teaching. The awards, established in 2005 by University Trustee Gerry Lenfest (Law '58), each come with a stipend of $25,000 per year for three consecutive years.
Professor Kelley has this to say about research and teaching at Columbia. "The strength of our great research Universities - the creation of new knowledge and the effective communication of knowledge through teaching - is also a source of tension. Both research and teaching are full-time, demanding occupations and achieving a synthesis is a challenge. While the traditional vision of the great teacher includes inspirational lectures and mentoring, the contemporary scholar-teacher is also engaged in highly collaborative efforts that closely resemble putting together an effective scientific research team. 'Frontiers of Science' is such a team effort: Columbia science faculty working together to bring the fruits of current scientific research to the core curriculum of the College. Frontiers and other initiatives have the potential to transform both science education at a pivotal moment for our country. I am deeply grateful to Gerry Lenfest for his recognition of our efforts at Columbia."
